Using Objects and Memories to Jump start Your Writing [HR]

July 14, 2018 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

The Hood River Library will host a writing workshop that integrates objects and memories to inform the writing process on Saturday, July 14 at 10:30 a.m. This program is facilitated by author Marian Szczepanski.

Objects and memories are powerful catalysts for literary explorations. In this interactive workshop you’ll learn how to use memories and personal mementos, family keepsakes and seemingly random vintage objects to jump start your imagination and spur your writing. The group will consider examples in fiction (an excerpt from the novel Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill), poetry (“Mauches” by Angele Ellis and “Explosion at Winco No. 9” by Diane Gilliam Fisher), and creative nonfiction (an excerpt from the memoir Virgin Time by Patricia Hampl). As a prompt for individual writing, each participant is encouraged to bring their own object, image or photograph that interests or intrigues. An assortment of common and vintage objects also will be available for participants who prefer to consider something unfamiliar. Handouts and a bibliography of cited sources will be provided.

This workshop is intended for writers at all levels in all genres, including novel, short story, personal essay, memoir and poetry.

Marian Szczepanski is the author of the historical novel Playing St. Barbara (High Hill Press, 2013), which Huffington Post called “a stunning debut novel that shimmers with unforgettable characters while casting necessary light on a dark chapter in American history.” She has won awards for short fiction and magazine writing and holds an MFA in fiction from the Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. She is a faculty member at Writespace, a creative writing center in Houston, Texas, and has also taught at the Texas Writers League (Austin), Gemini Ink (San Antonio), Village Writing School (Eureka Springs and Rogers, AR) University of Pittsburgh’s Writers Café and St. Francis University (Loretto, PA). She divides her time between Houston and Hood River.
